On Friday I was sifting through some memorabilia and found a Souvenir Brochure from the South African 25th Anniversary Tour of the Rocky Horror Show, and a portion of Richard O’Brien’s text resonated:
Transvetism is perceived as a psychological disorder. How or indeed why it happens, no-one seems to know exactly. Reincarnation is the long shot. The failure of hormonal triggers during gestation is a more likely explanation, or it may be the result of environmental trauma during childhood. Whatever the reason, it’s time for us to tear down the walls that we build between ourselves, and allow individuality to flourish in the spirit of true libertarianism. It’s time for humankind to become more gentle; the barbarians have had the planet for long enough. So, if you want to slip into a little black number with shoestring straps, feel free, for it is written (now anyway) that no army ever marched in anger wearing fish-net stockings and six inch high-heels.Richard O’Brien Rocky Horror Show Souvenir Program
As time has gone by we no longer refer to transvetism, but now acknowledge gender dysphoria as a real thing. And it is re-assuring that some sexologists are saying that it is not a mental disorder but rather a physiological one, where a transgender person’s physiological makeup does not correspond with their psychological one.
And while Richard O’Brien’s quote is aimed at transgender women, it definitely extends to transgender men as well. Be yourself, other people’s failure to accept you is not because there is something wrong with you, but rather because there is a hangover of barbarianism. Be yourself, and hopefully within our lifetime being a transgender person will become something that is no longer worthy of hate and anger.
I ordinarily sign off my posts with Love and … but today, for this post it feels more appropriate to sign off:
